July 14th

J has been keeping a fairly accurate record, so I'm going to fill in the gaps from the cycling perspective.

The main difference I noticed between Iowa and South Dakota was the condition of the roads. Iowa gets a D minus on roads. The only thing holding it back from getting a straight F is the fact that there are SOME really nice roads, but most of the one's that I saw or was on were just not cycle friendly. Also, to no fault of the Iowans, there farms do not smell anywhere near as good as the NY state farms. The main reason is that the pig houses/stables/? are right next to the side of the road and not very pleasant to smell.

South Dakota, on the other hand gets an A minus on their roads. The people of South Dakota speak in a sort of Minnesotan lilt. Their dialect has a musicality to it that makes them sound happy all the time. I'm guessing that if I ever got one of them seriously pissed off at me, I would have no clue, because even their angry voice would sound upbeat and happy!

Here's some pics I snapped along the way. Some beautiful, some bizarre!

Very pretty nuclear power plant dome? Rich 30 foot alien guy's expensive golf ball?

Awesome nice, wide shoulder on South Dakota road.

Sage Advice

Just a beautiful day!

Friendly horses were everywhere. They hung out in twos and would wait by the fence for you to come by and pet them.

Scaredy Cows - unlike the many friendly horses, cows would never let me get near enough to pet them.

More scaredy cows

Finally found a cow that would let me pet him!

This giant cow also let me pet him.

These people would rather WEAR animals than pet them.
